Executive Summary

Ovlox India is a technology-driven organization that relied on a legacy business application developed on Microsoft .NET Framework 4.x and hosted on Windows-based infrastructure. As the application grew, the existing platform faced performance limitations, scalability constraints, increasing maintenance overhead, and compatibility issues with newer technologies.

Zaptoz Technologies modernized the application by upgrading it from Microsoft .NET Framework 4.x to .NET 8, while redesigning the AWS infrastructure for improved scalability, security, and high availability. The solution leveraged Amazon EC2, Application Load Balancer (ALB), Amazon RDS for Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, Amazon VPC, NAT Gateway, AWS Systems Manager, Amazon CloudWatch, and AWS Backup - significantly improving performance, reducing infrastructure management effort, and providing a scalable architecture for future growth.

Current Challenges

Legacy Application Platform

  • • Built on Microsoft .NET Framework 4.x.
  • • Limited compatibility with modern frameworks.
  • • Increasing maintenance complexity.

Performance Limitations

  • • Response times degraded during peak hours.
  • • Windows servers required frequent manual intervention.

Database & High Availability

  • • SQL Server self-managed on Windows EC2 instances.
  • • Manual database backup and maintenance.
  • • Single application server with no automatic failover.
  • • Limited disaster recovery capabilities.

Scalability, Monitoring & Operations

  • • Scaling required manual provisioning.
  • • Unable to handle traffic spikes automatically.
  • • Limited monitoring and manual OS patching.
  • • Lack of centralized operational visibility.

The Solution Offered

Zaptoz designed and implemented a modern AWS architecture to support the upgraded .NET application.

  • • Upgrade from Microsoft .NET Framework 4.x to .NET 8.
  • • Migration of Windows workloads to Amazon EC2.
  • • Database modernization using Amazon RDS for Microsoft SQL Server.
  • • High availability through Application Load Balancer.
  • • Secure multi-tier VPC architecture.
  • • Automated monitoring and alerting.
  • • Centralized backup strategy.
  • • Automated patch management.
  • • Disaster Recovery implementation.

Solution Architecture

Detailed Solution Architecture

1. Application Modernization

The application was upgraded from .NET Framework 4.x to .NET 8, improving runtime performance, enhancing security, and simplifying future application development.

2. Compute Layer

Windows Server was hosted on Amazon EC2 with the application deployed behind an Application Load Balancer in an Auto Scaling-ready architecture for future expansion, using Amazon EBS volumes for operating system and application storage.

3. Database Layer

Microsoft SQL Server was migrated to Amazon RDS for SQL Server with automated backups, automated patch management, Multi-AZ deployment for high availability, and point-in-time recovery enabled.

4. Networking

An Amazon VPC with public and private subnets placed the Application Load Balancer in the public subnet, EC2 application servers in a private subnet, and Amazon RDS in an isolated database subnet. A NAT Gateway enabled secure outbound connectivity, and Security Groups restricted application and database access.

5. Monitoring, Backup & Disaster Recovery

Amazon CloudWatch monitored CPU, memory, disk, application health, and logs with automated alerts, while AWS Systems Manager handled patch deployment, remote administration, and inventory. AWS Backup automated EC2 and RDS backups to Amazon S3, improving Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and reducing Recovery Time Objective (RTO) through automated recovery procedures.

Key AWS Services Used

Compute - Amazon EC2 (Windows) hosting the .NET 8 application
Database - Amazon RDS for Microsoft SQL Server
Traffic - Application Load Balancer, Internet Gateway, Elastic IP
Networking - Amazon VPC, Public/Private Subnets, NAT Gateway, Route Tables
Storage & Backup - Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, AWS Backup
Operations & Security - CloudWatch, Systems Manager, IAM, Security Groups

The Benefits
